Girl collects books to help hurricane victims
DENVER, NC (FOX 46 WJZY) – During this week of giving, a little girl and her first grade classmates from the Denver area are collecting books for children impacted Hurricane Florence.
“We all want to help kids that are in need,” said 7-year-old Adara Miller.
All the students at Miller’s Lincoln Charter School in Denver are collecting books.
“We want to help them rebuild it and we want to help them have books too,” said Miller.
Many of the schools along the coast were devastated by Hurricane Florence. The books collected with Miller go to schools in Pender County and Wilmington.
“One of the things we found out very early on is her heart is bigger than anything we can understand. She always wants to help everyone,” said Heather Miller, Adara’s mother.
Heather Miller says wanting to help is nothing new for her daughter. A few years ago she collected donations to give to an animal shelter.
“We love it. I hope she continues to go down the path of helping others and this is what she wants to do with her life,” she said.

“It warms your heart because you hope that within the classroom you can advocate kindness for everyone and hope that they can develop those character traits within themselves,” said Kelly Kenning, Adara’s first grade teacher. “When you can see it happening in front of you it’s a great thing.”
When asked what this book drive taught her, Adara said, “To help other kids in need and no matter what to help.”
The book drive is going on through the holiday season. The plan is to deliver the books over the winter.
